The Greek word eikon in the Epistle to the Colossians had a wide range of subtle yet significant meanings within the Graeco-Roman world. It was a word used as early as Aeschylus from 5 B.C. and then regularly from Herodotus through to the Christian era (Arndt 222). The LXX and the Greek New Testament both employ the word in a variety of ways depending on the context.
In the book of Colossians, however, Paul used the word eikon to embody a very precise and important concept. More specifically, Paul equated eikon with Christ, stressing the fact that He is the "image of God” in full, exact and total essence (Col 1:15). Paul emphasizes that Christ as the eikon of God is totally and absolutely equal to God
It is believed this is where we get the modern day term "Icon" from.
